Almost anyone can record their music these days but getting a professional sounding mix is another story. I'll give your music the mix it deserves, by developing a custom made sound just for you or your band.

How does the process work?

Before we get creative I need to know if you have the materials I will need to get your mix started.

Pro Tools Session Folder

or

• If a Pro Tools session folder is unavailale I will need the following from you:

- Individual Audio Tracks in WAV or AIFF files at 44.1, 48, 88.2 and 96kHz; preferably 32 bit floating point but at least 24 bit, all starting from zero in the timeline.

- Print any midi/virtual instruments – I can only accept audio files.

- Please supply multi-track files dry, without reverb or effects. However, if you feel a specific effect, plug-in processing, or creative element (such as filter sweeps, delays etc) is an integral part of the sound, please provide the processed version as a printed audio file plus a ‘dry safety’ version.

- Please label all audio tracks clearly. Files named "Audio Track 1, Audio Track 2, etc." will not be accepted.

- I cannot stress enough how important it will be to have audio tracks properly prepared before mixing begins. This will make the process smooth and get you your final mix in the shortest time possible. All audio tracks must start from zero or at least the exact same location, usually at the beginning of the session. This prevents hours of manually moving individual pieces of audio tracks in the session so they line up and playback at the proper moment in time. If you need assistance in this prepartion, please do not hesistate to ask me.

- In addition to as much written information as possible, you’re welcome to provide a rough mix and a reference song. A commercial song is only a guide and results are completely dependent on the quality and style of the multi-track provided.

Once we've established that you have what I need to get things started then you can go ahead and send me a rough mix for evaluation (not required), then we set up a phone call or email correspondence to discuss your vision for the final mix.

You will then send me your audio files or Pro Tools sessions via Gobbler.com, yousendit.com, etc. I mix your performance and send an mp3 of the mix via email; you make your comments and critiques, and I post the final mix shortly thereafter. Then I would appreciate it if you would add me to your physical and digital liner notes as the "Mixing Engineer" for the track(s).

• I mix in my private studio and electronically deliver the mix. This protocol eliminates many costs including travel, commercial studio rentals, assistant engineers, and liability insurance. If you're in the LA area you're welcome to sit in on the mix session and I actually prefer it. Kind of hard to give someone a haircut if they don't show up.

• The fee per mix will vary. With the complexity of the arrangement, the more moving parts, the amount of mix revisions, the more time it will take me to get you a final mix.

What is a mix revision? A mix revision is a reasonable number of minor tweaks to levels or sonic elements within the mix, e.g. “bring the reverb on the vocal down, bring the level of the guitar solo up” or “add more boom to the kick drum, and the acoustic is too bright."

With many years of mixing experience, I'll be able to quickly identify the most essential elements of a song and focus my attention there to get you your final mix.

*I use Pro Tools. As one example, wav. files from Nuendo are considered 'unreadable' by Pro Tools. Specific steps must be taken when obtaining audio track wav. files from specific DAW's and importing into Pro Tools. Other DAW's would include Logic, Cubase, Garageband, Digital Performer, etc.
