Making Music is Like Dating

&quot;Making music is sort of like dating. If you see a girl that you think is drop-dead gorgeous, but then you go and talk to her and she is obvious trash, her appearance changes for the worse. Music is similar in that you can love the music, but once the people who make the music turn out to be shitty or uninspiring, the music quickly follows suit.&quot; - <a href="http://www.mixerman.net/diaries5.php">Mixerman

Studio Memory - Nelly Furtado and Neal Pogue

When I first started as a runner at Track Record Studios I got to help out on a string day. It was for <a target="_new" href="http://www.nellyfurtado.com ">Nelly Furtado's Loose album and <a target="_new" href="http://www.nealhpogue.com/">Neal Pogue was producing/engineering this session. I was in the North&nbsp;live room with a 16 piece orchestra and being the runner, my job was simply to make sure that all the players had what they needed; music stands, sharpened pencils, working headphones, etc. They didn't need much and I spent most of the session just sitting in the live room, listening..soaking in the sound of an orchestra, live.. and for Nelly's album, I don't recall which song(s) it was for.
It was an awesome day.

Pensado's Place / Mix Engineer Playlists

I started randomly choosing episodes of <a href="http://www.pensadosplace.tv/">Pensado's Place to watch lately but decided to go back to episode 1 and watch every single episode. This is like Full Sail, the seque! Full Sail was great, don't get me wrong. I learned the very basics of recording, concepts, basic techniques and guidelines. It got me entry into a multi-million dollar faciility as an intern when I first moved to LA. You can learn all of it on your own but schools are a way to sort of speed up that process and potentially get you in the door&nbsp;to some big studios.

Pensado's place takes things a step further. If you know the basics, Dave and his guests of the show, will take you another&nbsp;step (or several steps) further. After watching 10 episodes of Pensado's Place, I feel like I've been back at Full Sail for 6 months. I've already applied countless new techniques to my mixes and the difference is just retarded. The new mixes I'm working on make anything I've mixed before sound completely noob'ish.

Not sure if he'll ever come across this but Dave, THANK YOU. The knowledge you and your guests put out there for us is so incredibly helpful.&nbsp;I have seen the light! haha

I've always heard the names of some of the big time mix engineers out there but I've never really sought out their mixes to listen to specifically. I just listen to music and can tell you whether or not I like a mix. After studying up on some my favorites discography I'm noticing that most of my current favorite mixes have been mixed by those same people!

I've created two playlists for my current two favorite mix engineers. Tony Maserati and Phil Tan (also a Full Sail grad). Who my favorite mix engineer is something that changes almost daily along with my all time favorite artist, song, etc. These are my current favorites and I've put together a playlist for each on Spotify. Not a complete discography but just some of the more recent mixes they've done. Every one of these mixes is absolutely mind bottling.. go listen!

Jenefer Siân Live at Eleven in West Hollywood - 7/30 - [VIDEO]

Jenefer performed live for the very fist time at Eleven in West Hollywood on Saturday, July 30th. She performed two brand new and unreleased songs; &quot;Boys Up On Us&quot; and &quot;Up in Smoke,&quot; the latter produced by G2 and written completely by Jenefer. I mixed both of these tracks and also created the little intro track.

She absolutely KILLED.

&quot;And if you think I'm not conveying exactly what it was like to be there, you're right. That's the essence of a great show, you can't really describe it, you had to be there.&quot; - BL

New Jenefer Sian Singles and Remixes

I've been really bad about updating my site lately. Lots of catching up to do.

Jenefer has promised to release a new single every 3 weeks, starting with the release of &quot;Call You Out&quot; on April 19th. Since then she has also released &quot;Dead End&quot; on May 10th, &quot;Puppet Master&quot; on May 31st and on June 14th she released a remix of her single &quot;Operate&quot; by icehouseindustries.

&quot;Call You Out&quot; and &quot;Dead End&quot; were both produced and mixed by me. &quot;Puppet Master&quot; was co-produced by Wesley Avery and myself. The &quot;Operate&quot; remix was done by icehouseindustries and originally produced by Wesley Avery.

Lefsetz/LadyGaga/TroyCarter

I've been reading the Lefsetz letter for over a year now. Bob has a lot of really great insight on the music industry. Some things I agree with some I don't. It's usually an interesting read and a good debate. For the first time I decided to respond. First read his letter and the response from Lady Gaga's manger, Troy Carter to understand where all this came from.&nbsp;

Lefsetz on Lady Gaga/Amazon
<a target="_new" href="http://lefsetz.com/wordpress/index.php/archives/2011/05/25/lady-gagaamazon/">http://lefsetz.com/wordpress/index.php/archives/2011/05/25/lady-gagaamazon/

Troy Carter's Response
<a target="_new" href="http://lefsetz.com/wordpress/index.php/archives/2011/05/25/lady-gagas-manager-responds/">http://lefsetz.com/wordpress/index.php/archives/2011/05/25/lady-gagas-manager-responds/

This morning Bob sent out many of his reader responses to Mr. Carter's response, as he does. Here is a small sampling of the responses.&nbsp;

This guy puts Timberlake - and Bieber! - in the same sentence as The Beatles? Despite his otherwise reasoned response, he can't be sane.

Rob Meurer

___________________________________

&quot;Lighten up a bit, it's just music.&quot;

If this was the case, Troy Carter wouldn't feel the need to respond. And a world without Timberlake and Bieber? Get me a ticket on the shuttle to that planet. It's a far cooler world than ours.

Morgan

___________________________________

Putting The Beatles and Bieber in the same sentence is as telling a demonstration as is possible for how little this guy cares about music

Greg Reason

___________________________________

I gotta say, he had a pretty good response.

Chris Scott
Silverback Artist Management

___________________________________

He was making sense until he said it was &quot;JUST&quot; music. When players in the game are calling music a &quot;just,&quot; you know we have a problem. But then again, we already knew that.

Sam Leon

___________________________________

Fucking respect to Troy Carter!

Your commentating is world class Bob, but Troy's call call on the sideline aspect is 100% correct Bob.

Any idiot can be a critic.

Elise Lindsay

___________________________________

&quot;Lighten up a bit, it's just music.&quot;
Wow; interesting quote from a manager, really!

Ric Taylor

Maybe they should've listened to the cynics when it came to Timberlake and Beiber.

Peter Kearns

My response to Bob, and many of his readers is below:

I read through most of these responses and the phrase that comes to mind is &quot;GET OFF MY LAWN!&quot;

Certain songs resonate with you, make you feel something, whether it's promoting a political ideology or just makes you want to dance. Does it really matter? Who are YOU to say which songs and which artists are shit and SHOULD NOT resonate with ME (or any other music fan)? THAT is the beauty of music. It means whatever the fuck YOU want it to mean. Who are any of you to say that Lady Gaga is shit, or Bieber, or Timberlake, etc.

Bob once said regarding Christina Aguilera's Super Bowl flub:

&quot;Would YOU lose your place?

OF COURSE NOT!

But you haven't got the chance.&quot;

I think that applies to what Mr. Carter is doing as well. Of course your music means SO much more than Lady Gaga's, or, you would make better decisions in marketing her album or always say/do the right things to push the music industry in a positive direction. But what are you doing? Where's your album at? What makes it so much better? To me THAT is what is wrong with music industry today. More power to any of you that responded who are also in the trenches, making music, loving every second of it, and trying to get your voice heard too. That's what it's all about. Making music because you love making it, love listening to it, love how a great song makes you feel and how you can literally have it on repeat all day long and not get sick of it. But please think about the negativity you're putting out there. I see the pooh-poohing of &quot;pop&quot; music today as just being a judgmental, jealous, and angry person. That is no way to live. It IS about the music and who gives a shit if it's in a Google Chrome commercial? If the song is that great in your eyes it won't matter. However, at the same time, Troy's response and your thoughts regarding that may very well be what inspires you or someone reading your response to write a great song that resonates with someone.

I happen to love Born This Way, Femme Fatale, Teenage Dream, and many other recent pop albums. I also happen to love 21 and Sigh No More. Maybe I'm just a lunatic when it comes to music. But who cares? I like what I like and you like what you like and that's all fine. I'm a guitar player, played in some rock bands, metal bands and now I'm writing pop songs (still write some metal stuff on the side). I've only seen a microscopic amount of success but I make music because I love it. My &quot;success&quot; is in writing a song that I can be proud of, a song that I had a blast making either by myself or with others. The beauty in music is that you can do whatever you want with it. The same song can mean one thing to you and something completely different to someone else. Just because you don't feel the same thing as me from a song or artist does not make it wrong. In believing that, in fact, it is wrong, is what's wrong with music industry. I suspect that this kind of back and forth is no different from previous generations.

&quot;You're too old, you just don't 'get it.'&quot;

Don't be a drag, just be a queen. hahahaha

Thanks,

Matt Sirrine

First read his letter and the response from Lady Gaga's manger, Troy Carter to understand where all this came from.

Lefsetz on Lady Gaga/Amazon
http://lefsetz.com/wordpress/index.php/archives/2011/05/25/lady-gagaamazon/

This morning Bob sent out many of his reader responses to Mr. Carter's response, as he does. Here is a small sampling of the responses.

This guy puts Timberlake - and Bieber! - in the same sentence as The Beatles? Despite his otherwise reasoned response, he can't be sane.

If this was the case, Troy Carter wouldn't feel the need to respond. And a world without Timberlake and Bieber? Get me a ticket on the shuttle to that planet. It's a far cooler world than ours.

Putting The Beatles and Bieber in the same sentence is as telling a demonstration as is possible for how little this guy cares about music
I gotta say, he had a pretty good response.
He was making sense until he said it was "JUST" music. When players in the game are calling music a "just," you know we have a problem. But then again, we already knew that.
Fucking respect to Troy Carter!

Your commentating is world class Bob, but Troy's call call on the sideline aspect is 100% correct Bob.

Any idiot can be a critic.
Maybe they should've listened to the cynics when it came to Timberlake and Beiber.

My response to Bob, and many of his readers is below:

I read through most of these responses and the phrase that comes to mind is "GET OFF MY LAWN!"

"Would YOU lose your place?

OF COURSE NOT!

But you haven't got the chance."

I see the pooh-poohing of "pop" music today as just being a judgmental, jealous, and angry person.

My "success" is in writing a song that I can be proud of, a song that I had a blast making either by myself or with others.

"You're too old, you just don't 'get it.'"

Don't be a drag, just be a queen. hahahaha

Thanks,

Including my friend, Alex Merzin, who was the engineer on Eminem's Recovery album that is up for Album of the Year. Pretty awesome. Good job, dude! Alex is personally nominated for a Grammy.

The Scientist

&nbsp;I was just tweeting at fellow producer, Marlin Newsome (<a target="_new" href="http://twitter.com/#!/AllThatBass">@AllThatBass), talking about stinking from a recording session. Mainly stinking of weed. It reminded me of the many sessions I've had with reggae producer/engineer Hopeton Brown aka &quot;The Scientist.&quot; Those were some pretty cool and interesting sessions. Very different recording and mixing techniques but the finished product was real deal reggae. You can read more about him on <a target="_new" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientist_%28musician%29">wikipedia&nbsp;but you might be more interested in this video. This dude would dime out the SSL. On the MAINS! I wore ear plugs the entire session. He has to be nearly deaf by now.&nbsp;

Girls with Tattoos

A lot of guys (and girls) say they're not into girls with lots of tattoos. OK. Neither am I. Let me dig a little deeper for you. More than a majority of the girls with lots of tattoos ('lots' as in sleeves, half sleeves, back pieces, etc.) are busted to begin with. Check out this video of Beyonce covered in tattoos. Beyonce is like my ultimate ULTIMATE celebrity crush (she recently surpassed Kim Kardashian haha). Beyonce covered in tattoos...still wicked hot. So the next time you hear someone say they're not into girls with tattoos what they're really saying is they are not into busted ass ugly chicks with or without tattoos.

2010 Trip to England - Warwick Castle

Jenefer and I went over to England this past summer to visit her family. We had a blast and went to Warwick Castle. I've finally gotten around to gathering up all the pictures and video from my iPhone and everyone's elses digital devices. Here is a pretty awesome video of a video they had playing in the castle. Doesn't get much more epic than this:

Pretty awesome day today.

Had a chance run in with Larry Rudolph in West Hollywood today. He was kind enough to give me an email address. So I sent him an email with everything he would ever want to know about Jenefer Si&acirc;n and wouldn't you know a few hours later he writes back! I'm going to keep it my little secret as to what he said. We'll see where things go with this one. :)
